What is Dark Purple Gypsophila?

Dark Purple Gypsophila is a striking, deep-coloured variant of the classic 'Baby's Breath' plant. It produces masses of tiny, star-shaped dark purple flowers on delicate branching stems — perfect for cut flower arrangements, dried flower bouquets, and garden borders. This heirloom, Non-GMO variety produces true colour from seed and can be saved and replanted each year.

Growing Instructions

1.     Sow seeds directly into well-draining, alkaline soil (pH 7.0–7.5) after last frost

2.     Sow at a depth of 3mm, 15–20cm apart in a sunny position — full sun essential

3.     Keep moist until germination: 10–14 days at 18–22°C

4.     Thin seedlings to 30cm apart as they develop

5.     For cut flowers, harvest stems when about half the flowers on each stem are open

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gypsophila annual or perennial?

Annual varieties (including most dark-coloured cultivars) complete their life cycle in one season and must be sown fresh each year. Perennial varieties return yearly but are typically white or pale pink.

Can I use Dark Purple Gypsophila for dried flower arrangements?

Yes — Gypsophila dries extremely well. Hang stems upside-down in a warm, dry, ventilated space for 2–3 weeks. The colour is retained well when air-dried quickly.
